ROMANCE ON THE REEF is a standalone read with a happy ending. There are no sexy scenes or colorful language so any age from teens to grannies can read and enjoy. It is set in Hawaii with the Marines stationed on Oahu. It is a great read about love, forgiveness, life with a marine, deployments and every day living on an island. There are lovely and informative facts about the great state of Hawaii.PJ is the quiet one in the group. He is with the group but he usually has a book in his hands and has a snarky remark when poked. He is single but not looking. He is a rough and tough Marine but there are times when it seems like his heart is not really into it. He likes and needs his group of friends.Maggie is a very young widow with a 10 year old daughter, Bree. Bree is also a bookworm, she loves to read and she spotted PJ right away as a fellow reader. She sort of pushed her way into his life, he was not happy at first but then he found himself looking for the little girl at the events the group set up on the beach. They always had a book to discuss. Maggie lost her husband in an accident and she decided to stay on Oahu rather than relocate back to the states. She has an on-line presence and she and Bree live off of her salary and they save the money Bree makes with small modeling jobs. The government has pretty much set her up for life if she is careful and spends wisely. She is very aware of PJ but he doesn't seem too interested.Maggie has been renting a condo but the owner is moving back to the island so Maggie and Bree have to move. Rentals are hard to find because there are so many people looking. A friend tells her about a duplex that is the other side of PJ's unit and it is going to be available soon. PJ promises to let his landlord know about Maggie and recommend her as the new tenant.It has been 8 years since her husband passed and Maggie has decided to start dating again. She has several rules and one of the big ones is that she will date NO MILITARY men. Since the island has a lot of military it is going to be hard to find a guy that fits all the qualifications and is not military. Of course, this lets PJ off the hook. He is very military.This is a great love story. You get to watch two people fall in love going against everything they want for themselves. These two have a lot of very sad events in common. There is a lot about the state of Hawaii. I lived there two years many years ago and I didn't see half of what the author has already written about. This is a good series as you will learn a lot about the Marines. Being married to a Marine herself, Jess is getting her fact correct and is speaking from experiences in a lot of places. I highly recommend this read.I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 7/28/2021 Be still my heart! What bookworm reader wouldn't just fall absolutely in love with PJ, the bookworm Marine?? Because wow. This is probably one of my favorite books written by Jess Mastorakos. And sure, a huge part of it is PJ's bookwormness (and apparent hunkiness), but it really is more than that.Maggie and PJ share similar grief backgrounds and both find it incredibly difficult to let themselves love again. Maggie has already lost one Marine husband so she's not really looking to lose another. PJ's wife tragically passed in an accident while he was deployed and he's got another deployment looming ahead of him. The last thing he wants to worry about someone else back home when he needs to be focusing on his job.Oh, but when can you do when the chemistry is off the charts and the guy next door checks off all the boxes on your perfect man list? Well, almost all of them. The biggest one isn't checked off. He's still in the military. This is a book I would highly recommend! Oh, and the rest of the series too!
